Benefits of Prenatal Yoga for Mother and Baby

Prenatal yoga is one of the safest and most beneficial exercises during pregnancy. When practiced under qualified guidance, it helps with reducing pregnancy discomfort (back pain, nausea, swelling), preparing the body for labor, managing pregnancy weight gain, reducing stress and anxiety, and improving sleep quality.

Studies show women who practice prenatal yoga have shorter labor durations, lower rates of cesarean delivery, and better postpartum recovery. The breathing techniques learned during prenatal yoga are directly applicable during labor for pain management.

At Vimokshana, Dr. Brindhashree has extensive experience in prenatal care. Patient Ragini Rajendran shared: "I came here for prenatal yoga sessions and Dr Brindha took care of me well. I did all the stretches and yoga that she taught and I gave birth naturally."

Safe Asanas for Each Trimester

First Trimester (Weeks 1-12):

  • Gentle stretching and breathing exercises
  • Cat-Cow for spine flexibility
  • Standing poses for strength (modified as needed)
  • Avoid hot yoga, deep twists, and strong abdominal work

Second Trimester (Weeks 13-26):

  • Warrior poses (modified with wider stance)
  • Hip openers: Baddha Konasana, Malasana (squat)
  • Pelvic floor exercises (Kegels with breath)
  • Side-lying poses as belly grows

Third Trimester (Weeks 27-40):

  • Gentle hip openers and pelvic tilts
  • Breathing techniques for labor: Ujjayi, counted breathing
  • Restorative poses with props
  • Birth preparation visualizations

Always avoid: Deep backbends, lying on stomach, inversions, holding breath, and any pose that causes discomfort.
