How Yoga Treats Insomnia at Its Root
Insomnia isn't just about not sleeping — it's a sign that your nervous system is stuck in overdrive. Chronic stress, anxiety, screen time, irregular schedules, and poor sleep hygiene keep your sympathetic nervous system activated, making it impossible to fall or stay asleep.
Yoga treats insomnia by activating the parasympathetic nervous system (your body's relaxation response), reducing cortisol levels, releasing physical tension stored in the body, and calming the mind through breath and meditation practices. Unlike sleeping pills, yoga addresses the root cause and creates lasting improvements in sleep quality.
At Vimokshana, insomnia patients receive a comprehensive programme that includes evening yoga routines, Yoga Nidra, pranayama, sleep hygiene counselling, and naturopathic sleep support.
Evening Yoga Routine for Deep Sleep
Practice this sequence 30-60 minutes before bedtime in dim lighting:
- Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend): 1 minute — calms the brain and relieves stress
- Supta Matsyendrasana (Supine Twist): 2 minutes each side — releases spine tension accumulated during the day
- Viparita Karani (Legs Up the Wall): 5-10 minutes — the single most effective pose for insomnia. Drains excess nervous energy from the legs and calms the entire system
- Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclining Butterfly): 3-5 minutes — opens the hips and chest, promoting deep relaxation
- Savasana with body scan: 10 minutes — progressive relaxation from toes to crown
Pranayama for sleep: Practice 4-7-8 breathing (inhale 4 counts, hold 7, exhale 8) for 4-8 cycles. This activates the vagus nerve and triggers the sleep response.
Yoga Nidra: A 20-30 minute guided relaxation that takes you to the edge of sleep while remaining aware. At Vimokshana, Dr. Brindhashree guides patients through personalized Yoga Nidra sessions, available both in-person and online.
